Pay the rent

It will be best if I explain this through a story I created:

A young man moved to a big town and bought a house. He was thrilled — until he saw the house next door, rotting and covered in mold.

The neighbor, an old drunk man, was being thrown out.

Feeling sorry, the young man asked, “What happened? Why are they taking your house?”

Slurring his words, the old man replied, “I didn’t pay the rent.”

The young man said, “If you had just taken better care and paid your rent, you could’ve lived here happily for life. Why would you…”

But by then, the old man had already passed out in the yard, beer by his side.

This story reflects our life and the rent we need to pay.

We’ve got:

  • Strong bodies

  • Strong minds

  • Lives full of opportunities…

And yet, we think that if we don’t take care of it, it will somehow stay this way forever.

We drink.

We are lazy.

We don’t sleep.

We eat junk food.

We don’t exercise.

Then we wonder why we feel sick the next day, or why things didn’t work out.

We wonder why an opportunity failed when we didn’t even try.

We wonder why our life feels so miserable when we’ve been living it on easy mode.

I’ll tell you the reason: you didn’t pay the rent.

But if we even tried a little — we’d win, we’d catch the opportunity, we’d be healthier.

Still, I’m not here to tell you how to live your life. That’s on you.

All I want you to do is ask yourself this question:

Did I pay the rent for the blessings I’ve got?

Is the rent due?
